The harana, a classic Filipino tradition in which young women are serenaded by their suitors, comes to life in Assumption Antipolo’s annual Band Screening. In this event, bands from different schools and institutions, including some from AA, compete to save their spot in the Battle of the Bands during the upcoming school fair in January 2020.

Last November 16, 2019, these bands came together to revive the timeless tradition of panliligaw. Playing songs from the golden years of OPM to Billboard Hot 100 songs, they wowed both the audience and the judges with their skills and incredible stage presence. Bands like Singko, Chicharon, and Nexton, put their twists on favorites “Hey Barbara”, “Toothbrush”, and “Wake Me Up When September Ends”. Zero Theory, Takipsilim and others even sang original singles for their number.

Assumptionistas also serenaded their fellow schoolmates, with performances from in-house bands such as Acaya, Lemonade, Chasing Aurora, and more, gaining admiration from their fans, both new and current. Events such as the Rap Battle, Rockeoke, and the dance event Cypher showcased the talents of representatives coming from each high school batch. Booths and food concessionaires lined the edges of the Sports Complex basement, where guests could buy flowers and Band Screening shirts, and enjoy meals while viewing the performances.

During the annual Band Screening, talented singers come together to showcase their love for music. Through events like Harana, young musicians can continue to hone their skills and reach their full potential. The same can be said with the upcoming Battle of the Bands and the school fair.
